Why clean Solar Panels!

Think of the difference in your solar efficiency between the winter and summer months. Now imagine you put a sunshade over your solar. That’s exactly what happens when your panels are covered in dust and dirt. And it doesn’t take a lot to noticeably reduce the efficiency causing all that money you spent having them installed isn’t working for you. Especially considering larger sites are often spending $3,000+pcm on electrical power.

It’s not just and dirt that can reduce your efficiency but if your site is near trees or moisture prone areas then mould and Lykan build up can severely impact your solar panels ability to harness that green energy. Bird and (especially) bat droppings can also have a fatal effect on your solar panels as once the coating is degraded its  time for a replacement

Often businesses are unaware that solar arrangement can have an effect. If your solar is String (meaning they all connected and converted to usable power in one place) it means that the inverter only converts total energy based on the LOWEST PERFORMING panel! This is often the most cost-effective install for larger sites but can have devastating effects once one panel is running at low efficiency.

Why Choose JH Group?

As professional window cleaners we carry all the kit and equipment to clean dirt and grime from a wide variety of surfaces with the expertise and experience to do this in the hardest to reach areas of your business. And solar panels are probably in the hardest part to reach (on the roof!). But for us it’s just another day in the office and another surface that needs cleaning. If we can’t reach it with our feet firmly planted on the ground, we are all height safety trained and ready to ‘don’ the harness and get up on roof (permitted its safe to do so).

We understand that most likely you or the facilities manager will never go on the roof. That’s why we will take multiple before and after photos and produce a short document of the condition of the solar panels. (*disclamer, WE are not solar trained and therefore the document is for visual representation of panel condition only and not to be used for fault finding or diagnosis. If any problems are highlighted, the business should seek expert solar technicians.)

Contact us for a free quote

It's a cliché but a necessary one. All our quotes a free and no obligation. Even if you just want to ask if we have a look with the drone, we will be happy to help.

What to expect

From first contact we will arrange a suitable time to come and meet with the person in charge of facilities maintenance. After which we will conduct a site walk around taking necessary imagery to product a SWMS and highlight any hazards we encounter. It is preferable that we can gain access to the roof and we have the harness ready to go, alternatively we keep our drone on board and can take a look from the ground.

Once we are happy with the scope of work and all hazards have been documented we will send through a pack including necessary insurance documents, the quote and SWMS along with any other documentation required for the job (working with children or the elderly certificates etc.)

On the day of the clean we would require a system shutdown of the solar to make it safe for cleaning. We would then require an adequate water source and parking close to the building.

Once we’re finished and packed up, we will notify the relevant person and recommend that the solar be turned on 24hrs after we have finished just to be safe.

After the job is done, we will compile the images and send through the short visual report on the panels condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, we use a similar process to when we clean external windows with zero pure water and dirt agitation. High pressure solutions can damage the panels, wiring and can also cause the operator to become unstable on the roof.

Yes, JH Group Cleaning Services holds mandatory insurance. For peace of mind this document is included in all quotes. (click here for a copy of our insurance documents)

No. In almost all cases chemicals would not make any difference to the cleaning process but may damage the solar itself. We use zero pure water which will dry spot free and leave the panels with a fresh start. Even using just tap water can leave spots on the panels and over time these will etch into the coating and permanently degrade the efficiency.
